Is Radio Still Relevant?

Labels don’t want to sign a good song, they want to sign a movement.

Boom Box
Is Radio Still Relevant?

You can have a record where radio programmers and DJ’s are all saying it’s a certified banger but if there’s no movement behind it nobody cares. Why should a label take a chance on a song they think is good? It’s less risky to find someone with “ok” music and hustle with a built in fan base. Everything’s already moving, all they gotta do is put the machine behind it and go (look at soulja boy).

So how do you take a dope song and build that into a real movement? Radio used to be what all the independent rappers wanted to get that extra exposure. With the rise of the internet and people calling bloggers the new DJ’s, I don’t know if radio is as relevant as it used to be. Having a number 1 joint on your local station is dope, but spending that radio budget on internet promo can go a lot farther. Not to mention you won’t be limiting yourself to people in your own backyard.

When a major blogger co-signs an upcoming emcee people on that site will check for you. You get enough blogs talking about you, enough people on youtube checking for you, you’re building a serious online movement. You put that radio promo budget behind advertising your music online, the sky is green ya dig?

The revolution won’t be televised, but you can download it online and watch it in your ipod.

Donyell Marshall

Shot out to my boy Donyell Marshall. Anyone catch the 76er’s game the other day? He’s still got that 3. Anyone that can tie Kobe Bryant’s record for 3 point shots in a game is a monster. I remember a few years back when I first met Donyell through my man Billy Vidal. We were working out of K-Lou Studios when they were still in Richmond, CA. He contracted us to do some work for Da Heataz… a dope hip-hop group you should check for in Philly. We stayed up for a week grinding out hits. We’ve been producing records and writing songs for so long its a trip how many people you meet when you’re in the music industry. Glad to see Donyell still doing his thing. 14 years and counting… damn.

One word. Bullsh*t.

So I’m sitting here wondering how Merrill Lynch can lose $25 BILLION DOLLARS in 2008, get together with Bank of America and then take us for $45 BILLION DOLLARS, and then pay their “top executives” bonuses totaling $3.6 BILLION DOLLARS… ?!

And then I see this…

 I’m in the wrong business.
